Who We Are
The Institute partners with the Sports Medicine Service and the Laboratory for Soft Tissue Research at HSS. Our research is currently focused on three areas:
growing replacement articular cartilage in the knee and in the laboratory for implantation to repair localized injuries;
the creation of a synthetic ligament to replace one that has been torn without sacrificing healthy tissue; and
developing biological therapies to improve blood flow in tissues that have a naturally poor blood supply.
Anyone is susceptible to injury when participating in athletics. Our research hope is to minimize the surgical trauma caused by these injuries or perhaps eliminate the need for surgery in some cases. The Institute's work will hopefully extend the period during which each of us can pursue the activities and athletic pursuits that give us the greatest pleasure.
